Liber is an e-reader for your own books. It's built so that your reading stays yours.
What Liber collects
Nothing. Liber has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we run no servers that your data could reach. Liber only connects to the internet when you connect a cloud service of your own (see "Sync & cloud" below). Without one, it doesn't go online at all.
What stays on your device
Everything you do in Liber is stored privately on your device, where other apps can't read it:
- the books you add (Liber keeps its own copy) and their covers;
- your reading position, reading time, ratings, reviews, highlights, notes, bookmarks and collections;
- your settings.
Android's automatic device backup is turned off for Liber, so this data isn't copied to any cloud backup. To move your reading history to another device, use Settings → Backup & restore. That saves a file only when you ask, to a place you choose.
If you add Liber's home-screen widgets, they show the books you're reading and your reading goal on your home screen. The widgets read from a small file on your device and never go online.
Sync & cloud (optional)
If you connect a cloud service of your own in Settings → Sync & cloud (Google Drive, Dropbox, or a WebDAV server such as Nextcloud), Liber talks to that service directly from your device. Nothing passes through us. Liber only uses its own folder there and never reads or changes anything else.
What's sent to your service
- Sync: your reading positions, finish dates, ratings, reviews, highlights, notes, bookmarks, collections and reading time, with each book's title, author and series so you can recognise them. Books are matched between devices by a fingerprint of the file. Your settings aren't synced.
- Cloud backups: the same as a Backup & restore file, including your settings. These are written daily or weekly, as you choose, and only the newest 10 are kept.
- Book files are never uploaded. Liber only downloads a book when you tap it in "Books in your cloud", or, if you turn on "Add new books automatically" (Dropbox and WebDAV only, off by default), when it syncs and finds a book you put in that Books folder. The download goes straight from your service to your device. Liber keeps a list of the books it has added on your device only, so a book you remove isn't added again; disconnecting clears that list.
Each service
- Google Drive: Liber asks only for Google's narrowest Drive permission, which lets it see the files it creates itself, in a "Liber" folder. It can't see anything else in your Drive. Sign-in goes through Google Play services on your device; Liber stores your Google account's email address on the device to show which account is connected, and never sees your password.
- Dropbox: Liber gets access to one folder only,
Apps/Liberreader, and nothing else in your Dropbox. You sign in on Dropbox's own page; Liber keeps the resulting access key in Android's encrypted storage on this device and never sees your password. - WebDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud, a NAS or any home server): your server address, username and password are kept in Android's encrypted storage on this device. They're only ever sent to that server. Liber requires an encrypted (https) connection, except for addresses on your home network, where it shows a warning first. Google Drive and Dropbox always use encrypted connections.
- Disconnect removes the login from this device, and for Google Drive and Dropbox also withdraws Liber's access at Google or Dropbox. Files already in your cloud folder stay there, under your control: delete Liber's folder to remove them.
What your cloud provider does with files you store there is covered by that provider's own privacy policy.
Files you open
Liber only reads files you choose: in the file picker, with "Open with" or Share, in a folder you ask it to watch, or in your cloud folder's Books folder. You can stop watching a folder at any time, and Liber then gives up its access.
Reading aloud
Read aloud uses your device's text-to-speech engine. Liber only offers voices that run on the device, so the text of your books isn't sent anywhere.
The Premium purchase
Premium is a one-time purchase through Google Play. You pay in Google Play's own purchase screen, so Google handles the payment under its own privacy policy, and Liber never sees your payment details. Liber only asks Google Play, on your device, whether your account owns Premium, and remembers the answer on your device so Premium works offline. No purchase information is sent to us or to anyone else.
Contacting us
"Report a problem" and "Share feedback" open a draft in your own email app. You see everything in it, and nothing is sent unless you send it. If you do, we use your email only to reply, and delete it when it's no longer needed.
This website
This site has no cookies, no analytics and no scripts, and loads nothing from other sites. It's hosted by Cloudflare, which handles your visit's network connection, including your IP address, to deliver the pages and protect the site, under Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Changes
If a future version adds another cloud service or anything else that sends data, this policy will explain exactly what it sends and where, before you can use it.
Liber's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
